Richard Barrett

In tune with many artists, Richard’s life took a detour before he returned to his true passion. Originally from Cardiff, he studied Ecology at Sheffield University and initially went into teaching. However, having been raised to appreciate the importance of art Richard gravitated back to painting. He gradually built a strong reputation as a freelance artist, working as art director for a major publishing company before committing full time to his own painting.

Richard’s process stats with walking, sketching as he journeys. In his studio he follows an intuitive approach to painting; instinct and memory forge works that are an expression of the place observed. Each tries to capture those magical fleeting moments when the elements change the landscape. The resulting canvases are allusive and abstracted. You, the viewer, are invited to find your own interpretation.

Richard says of his work: ‘My painting is driven by the elements, the changing dynamics of light and how this breathes life into the landscape’.
