CYRIL CROUCHER
Cyril Croucher b.1951 ‘Living and working in Cornwall, my surroundings have a huge influence on my painting. My current work grew out of a fascination with the height of harbour walls viewed from a ‘low tide’ perspective, and with the buildings which are built on the piers and quays. The sense of height one feels when looking up at the walls from within the harbour gave me the same feeling as looking upwards at the immense space inside a cathedral. I have tried to capture this feeling of great height and by introducing other elements and memories from my past I hope to create a sense of timelessness, calm and intrigue. ‘My Venetian paintings were made as a result of a visit to Venice in July in 2005. It was my first time in Venice and I was not disappointed, consequently I have returned several times since. The romanticism of the faded colours and decay in the buildings - buildings which haven’t changed over the centuries - was a perfect subject for my style of painting.’
